Washington, DC
The American Mideast Coalition for Democracy (AMCD) strongly condemns today’s terrorist attack on a Greek Orthodox church in the village of Hamoud, in Jordan’s Karak governorate. Security camera footage shows three gunmen opening fire with pistols and an automatic weapon on mourners at a funeral. They killed eight people and wounded forty, of whom 27 remain hospitalized. The three suspects were wounded and arrested after a firefight with security forces.
Jordanian King Abdullah II condemned the shooting on X: “The terrorist attack against Karak will be met with the harshest retaliation. Those who delude themselves into thinking that they can divide Jordanians with their bullets have no chance in the face of our unity. All Jordanians, from north to south, are partners in land and fate, and nothing stands between them. Our deepest condolences to the families of the martyrs and we wish a speedy recovery to those injured. Every Jordanian life is precious, and we will strike with an iron fist against those who dare to threaten our nation.”
AMCD offers our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and to Jordan’s Christian community and we pray for the recovery of the wounded.
“Christians in Jordan were murdered today while mourning their dead,” said AMCD co-chair, John Hajjar. “Condemnation alone is not enough.”
Although the Jordanian government banned the radical Muslim Brotherhood (Ikhwan) in April of 2025, its terrorist ideology is much harder to eradicate.
“Banning the Ikhwan was an important step,” began Tom Harb, AMCD co-chair. “However, the Jordanian government must now dismantle the jihadist networks and end the incitement in classrooms, from pulpits, and within its own institutions.”
Since 1990, the Christian population of Jordan has fallen from 8% to 2.5% and this reflects the overall trend of a shrinking Christian presence in the Middle East.
AMCD calls on the Jordanian government to:
1. Dismantle irregular militias and networks operating inside Jordan and fully enforce the ban on the Muslim Brotherhood and its affiliated organizations.
2. Review and reform school curricula teaching intolerance toward non-Muslims, and mosque preaching that incites hatred against Christians and other minorities.
3. Review and dismantle any radical networks operating inside the Jordanian government.
AMCD once more extends our deepest condolences to the families of the dead and to the many wounded now burdened with life-changing injuries. It is our sincere hope that this latest atrocity with trigger the reforms necessary to end this pattern of intimidation and terror directed toward Jordan’s minority populations.
